Emeralds almost always have inclusions, which in this stone is not considered a flaw. In fact, it is considered very suspicious if a stone larger than a few millimeters has no flaws which usually indicates an impostor or simulant stone. In order to give emeralds a better appearance they are often oiled or irradiated, which is considered a standard practice.

The name Emerald is believed to be derived from the Ancient Greek word “smaragdos” which was originally applied to a variety of green colored minerals and simply means “green stone.”

Emerald‘s history begins in Egypt where they were mined in southern Cairo before 2000 B.C. and continued to be mined there until about 1200 A.D. One mine, in particular, was associated with the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, because of her love for and use of the gem. This led to the mine being named “Cleopatra’s Mine.”

Pliny, a Roman consular and writer, wrote that “nothing is more intense than the green of Emerald” and had said that “sight is refreshed and restored by gazing upon the stone.” Following this advice, the Roman emperor Nero reportedly wore Emerald sunglasses whilst watching the great gladiator matches.

In 1557 after a bloody campaign searching, the Spanish Conquistadors discovered the spectacular Muzo and Chivor mines in present-day Colombia.

Emerald derives its glorious green color from the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds are rarely flawless, therefore, stones are often enhanced by oiling them to hide the imperfects. As well, the step cut (or emerald cut) is used to maximize the stone.

Ancient mythology teaches us that the Emerald was associated with the Mercury, who was known to be the messengers of the gods, and of travel. It thus makes perfect sense that the Emerald is commonly referred to as the Travelers Protection Stone.

A lesser known “odd” fact of the Emerald is that when subjected to heat, it will actually sweat or expel water. Ancient writings speak of this extraordinary phenomenon.
