March Gemstone of the Month: Aquamarine

“EVERY BLONDE SHOULD GET ON SPEAKING TERMS WITH THE FAITHFUL AQUAMARINE. THERE IS NO PRETTIER COMBINATION THAN THE PALE BLUE OF THAT GEM AND THE GOLD OF THE NATURAL BLONDE. I SAY ‘NATURAL BLONDE,’ BUT IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME WHETHER THE BLONDE BE NATURAL OR INTENTIONAL BECAUSE I AM EXPLOITING AQUAMARINES, NOT BLONDES.

– FROM THE BOOK “GOOD TASTE” BY CECIL CUNNINGHAM

aquamarine-19

I respectfully disagree with Miss Cunningham.  I am not now, nor will I ever be, a blonde, and aquamarines look just lovely on me when I wear them. Of course she wrote the book in 1916 when the height of fashion was a white woman with blonde hair, so apparently, she was a product of her time. Apparently, she didn’t take into consideration that the Ancient Greeks were probably the first to use aquamarine in jewelry and I don’t think many of them were natural blondes. Whatever the case, it teaches us to be very wary of fashion advice, be it from 1916 or 2018. Now that we’ve dealt with the aesthetics, let’s get to the metaphysics.

Aquamarine is the birthstone of March, a month of endings and beginnings, as Pisces (February 19-March 20) is the sign that ends the zodiac and Aries (March 21- April 19) is the one that begins it. Whenever the symbols for the beginning and the end are put next to each other, it means “eternity”. So it’s very fitting for Aquamarine to represent March, as it is a stone of eternal regeneration and illumination. After all, isn’t that what springtime is—the regeneration of nature and the illumination of the returning sun?

“IT’S THE BEST STONE TO HELP YOU SEE WHERE IN YOUR

LIFE YOU ARE BLOCKING TRUTH.”

Aquamarine basically means “water of the sea” and it’s the sea where scientists say all life on earth originated. So the sea generated physical life… and although Aquamarine was probably named because of its color, I can’t help but wonder if its energies of regeneration had something to do with it.  As for its energies of illumination, it’s the best stone to help you see where in your life you are blocking the truth. Because “once you name it, you can claim it”, keep a piece of Aquamarine close by when you are on a quest to uncover the truth—be it through journaling, meditating, or in conversation with another person.

For physical support, Aquamarine is looked to in helping heal the eyes, throat, and glands—especially the thyroid gland, which many women have trouble regulating and harmonizing. An Aquamarine necklace is a beautiful way to keep a piece of Aquamarine close to the thyroid. I believe we humans started wearing jewelry as a way of keeping healing crystals and minerals on our bodies in an attempt to gain maximum benefit of their healing power.

Aquamarine is a throat and third-eye chakra stone. It helps with speaking the truth no matter how difficult and heightening psychic ability no matter how much a disbeliever. Try placing a piece of Aquamarine on your throat to encourage self-expression and on your forehead to sharpen perception. In Medieval times, large pieces of polished Aquamarine were used for scrying—gazing into a crystal or other medium for visions of the future. So if you’re lucky enough to come across a large hunk (at least as big as your hand) for a reasonable price, look into having it polished by a professional lapidary so, like the goddess that is Stevie Nicks, you can have your very own crystal visions.

If you were born in March, you may be aware that your birthstone is the exquisite, ice-blue Aquamarine. This well-known gem, whose name originates from the Latin for seawater (‘aqua marina’), is a gorgeous choice for those who love to be reminded of the ocean. There’s more to like about this stone than just its appearance. It is believed to have mystical properties and has been historically revered for its symbolic and protective powers. Here’s a glimpse of some of the myths and magic of March’s beloved birthstone.

Fast facts: what is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is a semi-precious member of the beryl gem group. It is graded according to its color, clarity, cut and carat weight (just like a diamond).

It’s the birthstone for the month of March and the wedding anniversary stone traditionally used to celebrate 19 years of marriage.

The aquamarine is linked to the zodiac sign of Pisces and the planet Neptune.

Renowned for its beautiful color, this gem can be several varieties of blue, ranging from sea-green to sky blue, to teal. Its saturation can range from a light depth of color to deep, rich tones. Its intensity can range from pale to vivid.

Aquamarine: a quick history

This enigmatic and somewhat mysterious gem has made its mark on history in many ways. It has been adored for its healing and protecting properties,  as well as its beauty, for centuries.

Archaeologists have discovered remnants of aquamarine jewelry and amulets that can be dated back as far as 500 B.C.

Roman healers heralded aquamarine for its power to cure ailments of the stomach, liver, and throat, as well as its ability to reduce anxiety.

The stone’s association with the sea is not merely for its color. Sailors have worn this stone in protective amulets. They have believed that the calming blue gems are a “treasure” offered by mermaids to guard them against evil and to keep them safe.

In the Middle Ages, aquamarine was worn to calm nerves, as well as provide an antidote against poison.

21st-century aquamarine-lovers consider this gem to be a symbol of courage, friendship, and loyalty.

Why is it still so popular?

Its stunning blue-green hue fascinates people. It has both a  natural and precious appearance this is very attractive.

The stone can be used for artwork carvings, as well as for jewelry.

Due to its softness and malleability, aquamarine is a jewel that can be shaped and cut in many ways. It’s is well-loved by many contemporary jewelry designers.

It’s extremely durable. Aquamarine doesn’t need special care or cleaning on a regular basis.

It is linked to happiness, good fortune in marriage, courage, release of stress and protection against enemies!

Where does it come from?

The world’s most valuable aquamarines are found in Columbia and Brazil. They are also found in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. There are mines, however, all over the world that have managed to extract high-quality stones.

Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Madagascar

Afghanistan, Pakistan

Sri Lanka

Russia

One final fast fact about this precious gem…

The Dom Pedro is the largest aquamarine ever cut, at a breath-taking 10,363 carats. It is on display at the Natural History Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

April Gemstone: Diamond

Diamond deposits were discovered in South Africa in 1886 and very quickly scores of mines shot up everywhere. So many diamonds were unearthed they flooded the market. No longer considered “rare”, their value was on the brink of plummeting. To prevent this, the top men in the diamond business got together and formed a cartel. They named it “De Beers” and bought up all the mines so they could control the flow of diamonds, thereby monopolizing the industry. Their stranglehold continued until the beginning of the 21st century when competition finally loosened their grip. They still sell 35% percent of all the worlds diamonds… which are still way overpriced.

Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring material known to man. Perhaps because of this, diamonds are noted for imparting fearlessness on the wearer. They are a highly vibrational stone and work on the crown chakra, helping to pull in protective “white light” energy. They are also energy amplifiers, be it positive or negative, so when you’re feeling angry or sad, you might want to remove your diamond jewelry. Many people may scoff at this, but consider that diamonds are now being researched to be used as transistors. Yasuo Koide, a professor and senior scientist at Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science says, “Not only are diamonds physically hard materials, but they also conduct heat well which means that they can cope with high levels of power and operate in hotter temperatures. In addition, they can endure larger voltages than existing semiconductor materials before breaking down.” Considering that light, sound and odors are transformed by our sensory organs into a code made of series of electrical impulses that travel along neurons from the body to the brain, it’s not a huge stretch to see how diamonds affect our human energy.

“THEY ARE A HIGHLY VIBRATIONAL STONE AND WORK ON THE CROWN CHAKRA, HELPING TO PULL IN PROTECTIVE “WHITE LIGHT” ENERGY. THEY ARE ALSO ENERGY AMPLIFIERS, BE IT POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.”

Black diamond or “Carbonado” as it is formally known, is the hardest of all the diamonds. It is found in Central Africa rather than South Africa where all the white diamonds are found. It is also found in Brazil. The origins of black diamonds are still a bit of a mystery because of the inclusions of other minerals that are not found in the earth’s crust. There are many theories about why this is, but my favorite is—

“Supporters of an extraterrestrial origin of carbonados propose that their material source was a supernova which occurred at least 3.8 billion years ago.[6][7] After coalescing and drifting through outer space for about one and a half billion years, a large mass fell to earth as a meteorite approximately 2.3 billion years ago. It possibly fragmented during entry into the Earth’s atmosphere and impacted in a region which would much later split into Brazil and the Central African Republic, the only two known locations of carbonado deposits.” (From Wikipedia)

Black diamonds are said to enhance personal power, influence, and originality. Maybe that’s why at the end of Sex and the City 2, Big gifts Carrie with a 5-carat black diamond ring and tells her, “Because you are not like anyone else.” After what she put him through in that movie I thought he was going to say, “Because it’s black, like your heart.” I mean, whining about them losing their spark and almost getting down with Aiden in Morocco? Bad Carrie! But apparently, she was so bad she was good, because black, white, blue or pink, a diamond is a gift we’d all like to receive.

EMERALDS GEMS

May Gemstone: Emerald

Receiving a piece of emerald jewelry can certainly make one’s heart race—and not just from excitement: the emerald is one of the most activating of all heart chakra stones. It’s also the only stone directly associated with the goddess Venus, the numero uno love goddess of both heaven and earth. Metaphysically, the emerald elevates feelings of love and loyalty into higher realms, with the ultimate purpose being to merge human love with that of the spiritual Divine.

“METAPHYSICALLY, THE EMERALD ELEVATES FEELINGS OF LOVE AND LOYALTY INTO HIGHER REALMS, WITH THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE BEING TO MERGE HUMAN LOVE WITH THAT OF THE SPIRITUAL DIVINE.”

The word emerald comes from the Sanskrit word “marakata,” which means “the green of growing things.” Quite appropriate for it to be the birthstone of May, the month when nature is bursting with new growth, reminding us that every living thing is eternally starting over.  Remember this when you’re depressed—it will help lift your low mood, as will holding your emerald and allowing your gaze to become lost in its vibrant green color. You can also do this before bed to induce peaceful dreams.

If you’re not sure if a personal desire is coming from the heart or the ego, use your emerald as a powerful aid in meditation when looking inside yourself. The stone encourages personal authenticity and loyalty to your “higher self.”

Even though it is associated with love and romance, you don’t often see it in engagement rings. This is because emeralds aren’t as hard as diamonds or sapphires and aren’t recommended for everyday wear. Better to invest in an emerald necklace and wear the pendant on a long chain close to your heart… or find a raw specimen and tuck inside your bra. Legend states that if the green of your emerald becomes less vivid, someone in your life is being unfaithful. Rather than waste your time trying to figure out who it is, do some self-inventory and make sure you are being faithful to the highest version of yourself. If the unfaithful one is revealed, assure them they are forgiven—and a new emerald could help you forget.
