The Mystique and Lore of Sapphire’s

Amulets, Talismans, and Religious Beliefs

Sapphires figure prominently in numerous beliefs and traditions, both past and present.  For centuries, sapphires have been used for alchemy, magic, healing rituals, and astrological prognostication.

Early priests and scholars believed that precious gemstones, including sapphires, had specific “virtues” that could be used to benefit man if their powers were properly harnessed. According to legend, Helen of Troy (c. 12th century B.C.) owned a large star sapphire, which was believed to hold the key to her desirability. The famous “seal” of King Solomon (c. 1000-931 B.C.) was legendary, not only because it was an inscribed sapphire, but also because it apparently gave him power over spirits in the air, earth, and underworld.

During the Hellenistic period (400-100 B.C.) when gemstones were associated with specific deities or occult powers, sapphires were routinely inscribed with the head of Jupiter (Zeus), the god of the sky. During this same period, Arabian kings were known to wear sapphires to protect themselves from envy and physical injury. Early sailors believed that sapphires would protect them from drowning at sea.

In Medieval times, sapphire was used as a test for infidelity; it was thought to change color if worn by the unfaithful. The wives of the crusaders were tested with sapphires (including color change sapphires!) when their husbands returned from their campaigns.

Sapphires in Religion

Sapphires have ancient associations with religion. The ancient Persians believed that Earth was balanced on a giant sapphire that was reflected in the color of the heavens. Buddhists believed that sapphires had a calming effect on people, which facilitated their devotion to prayer and meditation.  The seventh heaven of Islam is bathed in a shining light of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.

Sapphires are key symbols in the Christian religion, where they are associated with chastity, piety, and repentance. To the early Christians, sapphires symbolized heaven and their yearning for eternal life. Tradition holds that Moses’ Ten Commandments were written on tablets of sapphire so strong that a hammer swung against them would be smashed to pieces. Each of the Apostles was associated with a specific gem, and sapphire was known as the stone of St. Paul.

Charlemagne owned an enormous sapphire amulet that he wore prominently to display his devotion to God. In the 6th century, a papal bull decreed that every cardinal was to wear a sapphire ring on the right or “blessing” hand. In the 12th century, this practice was encouraged because it was believed to suppress sexual desires, promoting chastity and piety. Religion and politics weren’t the only things that Sapphire was a part of in history, the magical allure of these stones was also used for medical purposes.

Medicinal Properties of Sapphires

The History Of Sapphires In Medical Use

During the 12th to 14th centuries, members of the Christian clergy became interested in “lithotherapy” – the practice of using gemstones to heal the sick. The father of the modern botany and zoology, Dominican monk Albertus Magnus (c. 1193-1280), was one of many serious scholars who dabbled in the study of lithotherapy. Skeptics were dismissed as heretics, and scholars who did not enthusiastically support tenets of lithotherapy were threatened with excommunication. The Christian clergy were not the only scholars fascinated with the power of sapphires. Alchemists also sought to harness their legendary powers. Sapphires were also the favorite stone of necromancers, who employed them to summon spirits of the dead for prophecy and black magic.

General Medical Applications

In ancient times, sapphires have been used to protect the wearer by boosting the immune system. They were said to calm overactive body systems, treat disorders of the blood, and regulate the glands. They were believed to alleviate the suffering caused by rheumatism, allergies, biliousness, hiccups, and cancer. They were even said to cure chronic fevers and epilepsy. Blue sapphire was thought to increase the lifespan, end headaches, nightmares, and nosebleeds when placed on the forehead.

The ancient Egyptians used ground sapphires for eye-washes! The idea that sapphires were beneficial for the eyes persisted through the Middle Ages. The Dominican monk, Albertus Magnus (1327-1377) recorded that he saw a sapphire remove a foreign body from the eye. In 1391, a sapphire was donated to St. Paul’s Church in London by Richard-de-Preston, a grocer, so that it might cure the eye ailments of Pius petitioners.

Mental Health And General Well-Being

Early medieval writers believed that sapphires could reduce outbreaks of rage, dispel malicious behavior, and repel envy. They were considered helpful for treating colic, mental illness, and hysteria, and they were considered a good antidepressant.

The location where sapphires are worn also bestows particular health benefits:

  • Index (first) finger:
  • Eases ailments of the stomach and respiratory system.
  • Second (middle) finger:
  • Strengthens the mind, liver, and spleen.
  • Third finger:
  • Aids the kidneys and circulatory system.  It is also the best place to wear a ring if you wish for happiness and joy.
  • Little finger:
  • Bolsters the reproductive system, knees, legs, and feet.

Besides medical and religious practices the involved sapphires, spiritual uses for these stones have also been devised throughout the years.

Spiritual Properties of Sapphires

Understanding Sapphires In Spiritual Practices

Sapphires are known as the stones of wisdom and serenity. They are used to release mental tension and dispel depression. They are believed to facilitate meditation, calm the mind, and provide the mental clarity required to surmount obstacles.

Specific colors of sapphires are known to have additional attributes:

  • Star Sapphires
  • Exceptional for their protective qualities. The rays of the star represent faith, hope, and destiny.
  • Yellow Sapphires
  • Bring prosperity, stimulate the intellect and remove toxins from the body.
  • White Sapphires
  • Open the crown chakra, which elevates spirituality and cosmic consciousness.
  • Blue Sapphires
  • Especially effective for chakra healing—especially the throat chakra.  They are a good stone for those who are intent on finding spiritual truth.
  • Purple Sapphires
  • Improve meditation and psychic abilities.  They are also effective in calming overwrought emotions.
  • Green Sapphires
  • Stimulate the heart chakra improving one’s capacity for compassion, loyalty, and trust in others.  They also enhance your ability to recall dreams.
  • Pink Sapphires
  • Remove emotional stumbling blocks and illuminate the path to higher consciousness.  They attract positive elements into your life.
  • Black Sapphires
  • Build both careers and the power of intuition.

Since precious metals are energy amplifiers, the metal used to mount sapphires also have the ability to augment the power of each of the sapphire varieties.

Gold’s biocompatibility and conductivity have been recognized for ages. Worn on the body, it is said to be helpful for treating blood, skin, and heart conditions as well as epilepsy, scoliosis, dyslexia, and autism.

Because gold is chemically inert, it is also believed to prevent spiritual corrosion, fatigue, and negativity. If the wearer is mindful to avoid a tendency toward greed, gold serves to relieve tension, anger, and feelings of inferiority. Yellow gold harnesses the warmth of the sun and it promotes self-awareness and the realization of dreams. Rose gold enhances spirituality, and white gold channels the energies of both the sun and the moon. Silver is often associated with the feminine characteristics of compassion and empathy. Because of these traits, it helps to channel the positive energy of gemstone–including sapphires–into the body.

Sapphires and Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology)

What Is Vedic Astrology?

The cultures of the Indian subcontinent have studied different aspects of gemstones for centuries. Ancient Sanskrit texts give us a great deal of information on Sapphire’s ability to influence the cosmos. Jyotisha refers to an ancient Indian system of astronomy and astrology, also known as Vedic Astrology.

Jyotisha is a form of predictive astrology; prognostication centers on an evaluation of the natal horoscope as it relates to the moment and subject of inquiry. The practice of Jyotisha is based on the sidereal zodiac, which is different from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology.

Jyotisha is primarily concerned with the sun, the moon, five visible planets, and two lunar nodes (called Rahu and Ketu). These “planets,” as they are collectively called, impact our lives on many levels and contribute to our mental, physical, material, and spiritual well being. Each of the planets emits colored rays of light: the rays of the Sun are red, Moon orange, Mars yellow, Mercury green, Jupiter blue, Venus indigo, Saturn violet, Rahu ultraviolet, and Ketu infrared. When the rays are out of balance or “afflicted,” physical or emotional sickness occurs. Imbalances result when the planetary rays are distorted or improperly received by an individual.

The Vedic Zodiac

The Vedic Zodiac

Gemstones have long associations with astrology because as crystalline forms of energy they retain the astral influences of the sun, moon, and planets longer than any other known substance. Because gemstones have the ability to absorb, reflect and radiate different frequencies of light, they can be used to correct or amplify planetary influences. Practitioners of Jyotisha prescribe different gemstones to (a) promote the positive effects of favorable birth planets or (b) ameliorate the effects of unfavorable birth planets.

The primary gemstones include:

Ruby, which is associated with red light; Pearl-orange light; Red Coral-yellow light; Emerald-green light; Yellow sapphire-blue light; Diamond-indigo light; and Blue Sapphire-violet light. It should be noted that White (colorless) Sapphires might, on occasion, be substituted for diamonds because they too are associated with indigo light.

One of the most universal of all amulets is the Navaratna, or “nine gems.” Navaratnas are set with the nine gemstones of Jyotisha, which are known to influence the health and destiny of the wearer. White or colorless sapphires are never used in Navaratnas because they are only considered as a substitute, not primary, planetary gems.

A modern Navaratna

A modern Navaratna

Since Jupiter is the planet of material prosperity, progeny, and spiritual growth, many consider this planet of critical importance to their lives. People who suffer from depression, poverty, bad luck, blood or immune disorders, respiratory ailments, and liver problems may find their problems ameliorated by yellow sapphire. Although yellow sapphires can be effective if they are two karats in size, experts typically recommend that they be at least three karats.

Care must be taken in prescribing blue sapphire to treat a weak or afflicted planet Saturn in the natal chart of an individual, and it must be considered in conjunction with the individual’s ascendant, or rising sign. Saturn is considered a malefic planet; if poorly positioned, the individual may live a short lonely life full of sorrow, disappointment, bad career choices, and fear. Saturn rules the nails, teeth, bones, and nervous system. Blue sapphire can be used to treat heart disease, tuberculosis, rheumatism, deafness, mental and nervous disorders, and baldness. Blue sapphires of five karats are typically recommended, but effects will be realized if the stone is at least two karats in size.

Although diamond is usually recommended for an ill-positioned or weak Venus, white (colorless) sapphire may be used as a substitute or secondary gemstone. If the planet is afflicted, there may be problems in marriage or other relationships, lack of passion and sexual drive, or an absence of beauty and luxury in life. Venus also rules the reproductive system, kidneys, eyes, cheeks, and throat.

There are several ways to harness the healing powers of gems. Some practitioners make elixirs or tinctures, which are taken internally. However, most experts agree that the most effective means is to wear gemstones that touch the skin.

It is important to note that Jyotisha benefits the wearer of gemstones; crystals do not have the same effect. Jyotish gemstones must also be natural, untreated gemstones. Synthetic sapphires have not been exposed to planetary rays over countless eons, and therefore cannot be used in Jyotisha.  Heat treatment also negates Sapphire’s inherent energy, rendering it useless for therapeutic applications.

To harness the power of sapphires, they must be eye clean.  Wearing flawed sapphires, even in ignorance, can have dire effects—especially in the case of blue sapphires. An experienced Vedic astrologer will also inform you of the means to purify your gemstones, the best time and day to wear the gemstones, and the length of time they should be worn to have the greatest effect.

Vedic Astrology Today

Sapphires, if worn, ingested, or otherwise applied to the body, have long been credited with an ability to heal numerous medical and mental conditions. These claims have not been verified by the Western medical establishment … but their influence in the philosophies of the East cannot be disputed. Vedic astrology has a venerable history. Why not explore it for yourself?

Larimar: The Atlantis Stone

Larimar or blue pectolite is an extremely rare gemstone. It has been found only in one location: a mountainous, relatively inaccessible area in the province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic. The first mention of the stone is in a request to mine Larimar in 1916, however, it wasn’t until 1974 that the stone really made an appearance.

About Larimar

In 1974, Norman Rilling, a member of the U.S. Peace Corps, and Miguel Méndez, a Dominican found pieces of Larimar on the seashore. The word Larimar was created by Mendez, who combined his daughter’s name Larissa with the Spanish word for sea, Mar.

Before Mendez and Rilling, local inhabitants of the region and their ancestors had long been aware of the stone. Early theories suggested Larimar was produced by the Sea, later by the earth’s volcanic movements. Island legends said that the stones could be collected easily on the beach, but one day there were no more blue Larimar stones left. Locals explored upstream and found a rock formation, which appeared to be the source of the blue stone. This legend holds truth; Mendez and Rilling in 1974 would follow a river upstream and find sources of the blue stone.

Most small blocks of Larimar are in situ, meaning they exist in the very place where they formed. However, through soil erosion, some pieces broke off and were moved by rainfall down the slopes of the hillsides to rivers. The river deposited them in the Caribbean Sea, some pieces washed up on the seashore by waves.

The stone is formed when hot gases push crystallized minerals up through volcanic ‘tubes’. In order to mine and excavate the stone miners must identify these tubes and dig deeper and deeper into old volcanoes. Larimar is used most often to make jewelry but has also been used to make beads, decorative objects and even handles on cabinets.

The Caribbean Gem

Larimar is considered a healing stone and said to be finely tuned to the human body particularly to the throat area. It is said that it increases speech and communication skills and supports the body’s natural healing process. Persons believing in this have been known to wear Larimar jewelry or to put pieces of Larimar in their pockets or under their pillows. Larimar is also called the Atlantis Stone, because of a Spiritual master who lived in Trinidad and Tobago and who founded many Yoga Centers across the world, claimed that some islands in the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic were part of the lost continent of Atlantis. He went further to say that on one of those islands a blue stone with healing powers would be found – a description that corresponds to Larimar. Today, there are thousands of people, naturalists and persons practicing alternative and holistic healing methods, who use Larimar to assist and reinforce healing processes.

Larimar’s beautiful blue color is often considered to embody the beautiful blue colors of the sea and sky found in the Caribbean. Its origin and appearance have made it popularly known as the Caribbean Gem. Larimar jewelry is popularly created and sold in stores throughout the Caribbean.

Being exquisite and magical has its price.  Lapis Lazuli has become one of the most faked gemstones in the world.  It’s not easy to tell the difference between fake lapis and the real gemstone.  Each day the imitations are becoming better.

Imitation Lapis Lazuli is very common.  In more recent times large volumes of synthetically produced lapis have flooded the market place.  The imitation techniques are getting better each day.  Some of it is such a good quality that it is hard to tell apart from the real thing.

Many cheap minerals and gemstones can be dyed to imitate lapis.  Poor quality jasper, white howlite, spinel, sodalite or calcite can be used for this purpose.

The best way to detect fake lapis is by only looking at it.  Although you probably better be an expert because the imitations are so good that you can be easily fooled.

Primary Test

Magnification will reveal a totally unnatural appearance to this material.  Here is where you’ll see the perfect golden specks patterns the fakes have.  The flat blue and the white streaks when scratched will also be present.

Lapis has that intense deep dark blue (ultramarine) color.  It is like looking into a well of water.  The fake looks flat dark blue.  Only the very best top quality lapis is a uniform blue color with virtually no fool’s gold.  This lapis is incredibly rare deeply sought after and costs a fortune.  This is the type of lapis you only see set into the finest 18k or 22k gold settings.

August Birthstone: Sardonyx

Sardonyx History

Sardonyx can be traced back four thousand years to Ancient Egypt. For most of its history, this stone has been used to create cameos and intaglios. In Ancient Rome, women wore sardonyx necklaces with cameos of Venus in hopes of harnessing the power of the goddess of love. It was also common for soldiers to wear sardonyx rings and carvings containing images of Mars, the god of war, into battle as a means of protection. Sardonyx was also a popular stone for Roman seals and signet rings that were used to imprint wax emblems on official documents because hot wax doesn’t stick to this stone.Sardonyx is an agate whose banding is straight and parallel. Much like agate, it is dyed to enhance or change its colors. Dyeing agate was an art practiced by the Romans from early on, but it reached perfection in the 1820s in Oberstein, Germany. That town is still the world’s center for the finest cutting and dyeing of agate. Although the details of the process remain a commercial secret, it is known that iron oxide is a pigment used to create the rich combination of deep orange-reds in red and white bullseye sardonyx and in the red and white-banded variety. Carbon is used to create the striking deep black banding in black and white banded sardonyx. The effects are stunning–ancient agate beads in rich colors perfect for blending with solid colored red or black beads.Sardonyx is August’s birthstone and makes a great gift for anyone born in this month.

Sardonyx Metaphysical Properties

Used as a stone of strength and protection since ancient times, sardonyx is associated with courage, happiness, and clear communication. It brings lasting happiness and stability to marriage and partnerships. The spiritual values of red and white-banded and red bullseye sardonyx make these stones particularly powerful. In fact, they are said to allow one to project such an incredible charisma that many people suggest the stone be used with care to avoid overwhelming others. Wear them, they say, when you want extra power in a particular circumstance.Much of the black and white-banded sardonyx’s power comes from its association with a particular body type–slender, quick-moving people who are intellectually active. If you’re clever, versatile, highly verbal and have an optimistic disposition, those traits may be heightened when you wear black and white-banded sardonyx. Or, you can wear it to help you control one of those traits if it’s working against you. Some believe that placing sardonyx at each corner of a house will protect against evil.

Sardonyx Geological Properties

This stone combines alternating layers of sard and onyx; hence its name. Sard appears anywhere from a dark orange to red to almost black. Onyx, although thought by most to only appear in black, can appear in almost any color. These two types of the mineral chalcedony are paired in bands to create sardonyx. Also known as Sardinian Onyx, it may be clearly banded or have a less defined mix of colors. The best examples of sardonyx, which display sharp contrasts between the layers, are found in India. Other deposits include Brazil, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Madagascar, Uruguay and the United States.

Mineral Information Microcrystalline quartz, banded chalcedony
Chemical Composition SiO2
Color Red and white; black and white (dye enhanced)
Hardness 6-1/2 – 7
Specific Gravity 2.60-2.65
Refractive Index 1.544-1.553

Proper Care of Sardonyx

Clean sardonyx using warm soapy water and a soft brush. Although it has a high hardness, sardonyx can still be scratched or damaged by gemstones with a higher hardness, as well as other materials. Avoid using household chemicals when cleaning sardonyx beads, components or jewelry. This stone can be sensitive to heat, especially dyed stones, and prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade color-enhanced types. Store sardonyx inside a fabric-lined box or wrapped in a soft cloth.

Use Amazonite to calm yourself after exposure to negativity.

Imagine yourself and each member of humanity as a particle of water in a river. We are each individual, yet journeying the path together and being swept along by the current of life. Sometimes we hit some bumps and experience rapids or tiny waterfalls, and this ultimately accelerates our path and adds to the health of the entire river and ecosystem. We might find ourselves circling in an eddy or a whirlpool, repeating the same loop with the same water particles until the energy that held the whirlpool together shifts. Then we break free and ultimately keep moving along until we unite with the vast ocean. A stone that can keep us in balance and harmony as we flow through the river of life is Amazonite, named after the mighty Amazon river.

Amazonite is a gorgeous Microline feldspar with a vivid turquoise or blue-green color. Fine white veins are evident when polished, as well as a pearly iridescent quality. Working with Amazonite can have the same healing effects as jumping into a natural water source, such as Barton Springs–it is very balancing, refreshing, purifying, and calming. It has a powerful soothing effect on the emotions, nerves, chakras, and physical body. Amazonite can cleanse negativity from any chakra, as well as from your mental and emotional bodies, and it can keep your aura protected from EMF’s. It is also one of the best balancings and harmonizing stones out there. According to Melody, author of Love is in the Earth, Amazonite helps you to balance your masculine and feminine sides, as well as many facets of your personality and lifestyle. She says it produces a balancing and preventative energy that is ideal for general health maintenance since it aligns the physical and etheric bodies.  For all of these reasons, wearing or working with Amazonite regularly can help you to maintain a complete sense of well-being.

Amazonite has a special resonance with the heart and throat chakras. It helps you to tune into the truth that resides in your heart and to live and express it with integrity. I agree with Naisha Ahsian, co-author of The Book of Stones, that Amazonite can help those who fear conflict to speak up and set appropriate, loving boundaries when necessary.  Interpersonal relationships can have many complex layers. In certain situations, Amazonite has helped me to clarify all of my feelings and to value myself enough to express them–even the uncomfortable ones–in the highest and most heartfelt ways possible. I highly recommend this stone for anyone who is experiencing throat chakra blockage due to fear of expression. This is a core pattern that can relate to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), which seems to affect lots of women. Oh, and one other unrelated but a noteworthy property of Amazonite: it has been historically used to increase the flow of prosperity, new customers, and good fortune in business.  What’s not to love about this stone?

Garnets are a related group of minerals. Members of this group include: Almandine (red to violet red); Spessartite (yellow, rose, or orange to reddish-brown); Pyrope (deep red); Grossular (white, yellow, yellow-green, brownish-red, orange or black); Andradite (colorless, yellow-green, or brown to black); Uvarovite (deep emerald green). The most prized garnet is an emerald green variety called demantoid and is a member of the adradite group.

Although the most commonly known garnets are red, there are a number of varieties whose properties are dependent on their color:

  • Grossular (green): prosperity and health
  • Spessartine (red): creativity, sexuality, attraction
  • Rhodolite (deep red): emotional healing, self- worth, walking the spiritual path
  • Almandine (brown): strength, security
  • Black Andradite: grounding, protection, knowledge, creative power
  • Uvarovite (deep green): overcoming poverty consciousness, manifesting abundance
  • Pyrope (blood-red): related to blood diseases.
  • The pink Grossular varieties sooth a harassed nervous system and are used by healers for stress-associated ailments, such as anorexia, distrust, and people needing comfort.

Garnet comes in many colors, but now we will speak only about red Garnet.

Garnet is used as medicine for treating hemorrhage, blood pressure, gallstones, hepatitis, anemia, acne, fever and inflammatory problems. It is also said to relieve rheumatism, depression, stress and to prevent nightmares.

Garnet enhances health throughout the entire circulatory system. It supports the body’s production of healthy hemoglobin and balances cardiac rhythm disturbances (except arterial hypertension). The restorative properties of garnet are employed in the healing of toxicity and blood poisoning as well as circulatory dysfunction. Garnet can be used with considerable advantage by heart patients or those under stress or strain. It relieves tensions and promotes rest and relaxation. Direct contact with the skin is important. For example, when small garnet beads in a necklace move over the skin, the effect of the stone is magnified.

Garnet promotes regeneration of damaged organs and tissues; it treats disorders of the spine and spinal fluid, bone, cellular structure, and composition. Garnet helps regenerate DNA and stimulates the metabolism, assisting the body in the assimilation of minerals and vitamins. The Garnet is also associated with the thyroid and spleen. It helps cleanse and purify both when held over the area. In this way, a garnet tones the spleen and boosts the immune system and energy levels. They have a great restorative energy, making them useful for cases of fatigue and depression. Garnets are often worn to enhance bodily strength, endurance, and vigor.

Working on a cellular level, they can be useful for speeding the healing of injuries. Place a garnet crystal over an injured or ill area for ten to 30 minutes at a time, focusing on the positive, re-building energy of the stone.

Garnet is helpful for both genders. For men, it keeps the reproductive system healthy. For women, it promotes hormonal balance and is said to reduce swelling. Garnet is also used in balancing the sex drive and in cases of low libido.

Garnet has been related to the foundation (root), or crimson chakra; imbalances of this chakra can manifest as nervousness, irritable bowel and lack of energy.

Red Garnet: Root and Spleen Chakra. Warms, energizes emotionally and physically (arthritis, frostbite, paralysis), grounds. Used by ancient cultures. Exhaustion, low blood pressure, detoxifying and strengthening blood, muscles, kidneys, gallstones. Stimulates life force and sexuality, hormone balance, antibodies, fertility, persistence, stamina, passion, confidence (and stubbornness). Yang (avoid if excess anger, impatience, high blood pressure, heat, inflammation, etc.)

Native Americans used garnet to decorate their dream catchers and shields and believed that garnet had medicinal powers. When worn, garnet was thought to protect the person from poisons and wounds. Some people also believed that garnet could cure depression, prevent nightmares, break fevers, reduce inflammation and stop bleeding.

The ancient Egyptians used garnets as an antidote for snake bites and for food poisoning.

Perhaps the strongest virtue of the garnet is its ability to help one overcome depression. The stone has been known to dissolve ingrained behavior patterns that are no longer positive and bypasses resistance or self-induced unconscious sabotage. It aids in letting go of useless or old ideas. The stone revitalizes, purifies and balances energy, bringing serenity or passion as appropriate. It removes inhibitions, taboos, anger, and discord. It alleviates emotional disharmony, brings a calming influence, and protects the wearer from being affected by the unwanted energy of others. It strengthens the survival instinct in a crisis, or in extremely traumatic situations, bringing courage and hope where it seems like there is no way out.

The red color of the garnets suggests a connection with love and permanence, but also with passion and desires. Not only is this passion linked with sexual lust, it is also linked with all the different desires that an individual can possess. In this sense, red garnet can be used to restore lost passion. Garnets can also be related to the will to execute some decision.

Wearing garnet jewelry is useful for balancing the emotions as well as the sex drive. It will either instill calm if too impassioned or passion if too passive. Garnet is also an ideal relationship stone. It brings about feelings of devotion, loyalty, and commitment. Garnets relax and secure comfort in transitional times, such as for example, bringing an experimental love relationship to a more permanent level of devotion.

Garnets’ loving actions help widows recover from the grief of loss. They soothe when relationships have not worked out as planned. Garnets bring hope and they bring the love of others to expressions of warmth and understanding. Garnets are even said to help widows attract new husbands!

If you are feeling down and emotionally suppressed, the vibrant energy of the garnets can help to awaken the heart center – Anahata. They help in increasing personal strength, endurance, and bodily power. They should be discharged by holding them for 3 minutes under flowing water. Garnets should be charged placed on a cluster of rock crystals.

This endlessly useful gem also helps hone perception skills, improving one’s ability to read people, and to understand oneself. It’s purifying energy serves to get rid of unhealthy psychological patterns which may be causing repetitive problems.

Garnets are used to reduce and eliminate self-sabotage whether conscious or unconscious. Garnet is a stone of regeneration and stability. It is said to bring positive thoughts and be excellent for manifestation and bringing abundance. It has also been used to assist in diminishing or eliminating abandonment issues.

The stabilizing quality of Garnet can help bring order to chaos whether internal or external. It discourages disorganized growth and brings inner strength.

Garnet can boost the entire system’s energy and remove negative energy from the chakras. Garnet has been used a great deal for gentle spiritual healing and is used to enhance intuition. Garnet is associated primarily with the root chakra, but also with the heart chakra. It is used to remove negative energy from all the chakras. Garnet is known primarily as a protective stone, but it is also an overall balancing and regenerating crystal.

Garnets are recognized as spiritual minerals able to heal and intensify relationships. But they can do more than that; they are able to bring certain relationships to a higher, more spiritual level. Depending on their composition, garnets can be colored differently, but the most common color of garnets is red.

Garnet has been used to release bad karma, and to encourage the movement of the kundalini in an orderly manner.

The Garnet is usually held in the hand or placed on top of the head when searching or meditating on past lives. Information that is beneficial and helpful will usually be released for the searcher. The information released in a search may be painful, but it will always be what the searcher needs.

As with all crystals, garnet should be cleansed initially and regularly. They can be used by positioning on the body for meditation, or emotional and physical healing. One of the unique properties of garnet stones is that they amplify the energy of other healing crystals so they can be used to enhance other gemstones if desired.

The garnet is believed to carry with it sensual energy. When worn, garnet aids in fertility, attraction and helps create a strong desire for passion and love. The stone is said to balance the sex drive. Garnet moves a couple deeper into a passionate and sensual exploration of sexual magic. The stone inspires commitment, monogamous and stable marriage, and promises one’s love, devotion, and fidelity with surety. It can also aid in finding true lovers. For married couples, the garnet promotes a strong, stable relationship of love, passion, commitment, devotion, and fidelity. The garnet is the gemstone for the 2nd and 18th wedding anniversary.

Garnets are still admired for their beauty and value and make wonderful gifts for January birthdays or anyone who appreciates the sparkle of deep red in their ring, necklace or earrings. Their power is in more than their beauty, it is also in their ability to last from generation to generation.

In a metaphysical sense, one of the most important characteristics of the garnets is their purification ability. They have a strong healing capacity and are able to help in purifying the bodily energies, in removing toxins, and in restoring, revitalizing and cleansing the body, the mind, and the spirit.

Garnet creates harmony. It’s energy first purifies, then energizes, installing either intensity or calm, which ever action is necessary for balance. Although connected with the sacral chakra, it will help cleanse and revitalize the entire chakra system, expelling negative energy.

Garnets’ ability to pull potential realities into manifestation lets them work within the quantum field and the law of attraction. They act to help change the world by increasing expansiveness in awareness and manifestation.

The name “garnet” comes from the Latin granatus, a grain possibly in reference to malum garanatum (pomegranate) a plant with red seeds similar in shape, size, and color to some garnet crystals. Legend states that Hades gifted a pomegranate to Persephone before she left his domain to ensure a speedy and safe return. When she did return, the fruit transformed into a handful of the red gemstones.

Garnet gemstones have been used in jewelry and other ways for many thousands of years. It was a symbol of one of the original 12 tribes of Israel and a birthstone. According to the ancient Jewish text the Talmud, a garnet provided the only source of light on Noah’s Ark. It was said that Noah guided the ark by the light of a garnet lantern during the rain and darkness of the deluge. Many courageous discoverers and travelers wore Garnets for protection. They were considered powerful talismans and protective stones because it was believed that Garnets illuminate the night and prevent their wearer from nightmares and any sort of evil or disaster. Today science explains to us that the proverbial luminosity of Garnet is caused by its high refraction of light.

Garnets have long adorned the prominent and the wealthy throughout time. Garnet jewelry has been found in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman ruins. The use of garnet beads and inlay work has been evident between 3100 B.C. and 2300 B.C. in Egypt. Garnets were placed in Egyptian tombs to pay the deceased’s passage into the netherworld. It was used between 2000-1000 B.C. in Sweden and later in fourth and third century B.C. in Greece.

Garnets were also used in burial jewelry and carved signet rings to proclaim royalty in 300 B.C during the Bronze Age; garnet necklaces were found in the graves of Bronze Age Czechoslovakians.

In the Middle Ages, between 450 – 1500 A.D., red garnets were highly valued by the nobility. Garnet was commonly believed to guard against poison; Royals would often drop a garnet gemstone into a glass of wine to ensure they were not poisoned to death. This stone was worn as a lucky charm by warriors of the medieval times for success and protection. Rings with Almandine (red-violet variety of Garnet) were very popular among Crusaders. The stone was set in shields, buckles and other items worn by Crusaders. Garnets were also worn by the Crusaders as an aid to safely find their way home. Eastern European folktales speak of garnets being worn around the neck to guard against night-wandering vampires.

Some Asiatic tribes fashioned garnets into bullets believing that they would be more lethal than lead bullets. According to some, in 1892 the king of Kashmir used garnet bullets against the British army on the Kashmir frontier.

In Indian mythology, garnet is called Kundalini Fire (fire of eternal metamorphosis). In Buddhism and Hinduism, garnets are believed to enlighten the soul and give wisdom.

A thriving garnet jewelry and cutting industry based on the very popular red pyrope garnets was started in Czechoslovakia in 1500. Until the nineteenth century, it was the world’s largest source of gem garnets. These fiery red pyrope garnets were very popular in Victorian jewelry. In the 18th and 19th centuries, perfectly transparent garnet grew to become the peak of jewelry fashion. The discovery of a bright green Grossular garnet in East Africa in the late 1960’s that was named “Tsavorite” by Tiffany’s jewelry firm that also named and popularized the blue lavender zoisite gemstone as Tanzanite. This very exciting discovery brought the gemstone and jewelry industries a new color of garnet that can rival emerald in its luminescent green color. The discovery of a fiery orange variety of spessartite garnet on the Angola-Namibian border in the 1980’s also rocked the gemstone and jewelry world. The incredible radiant orange garnet, the likes of which had never been seen before was a major development in bringing garnet to the forefront of exciting gemstones.

Jewelry made with the garnet gem is extremely popular because of its beauty and characteristics. With a relatively high Mohs’ hardness of 7 to 7 ½, Garnet makes a nice hard stone for rings and other jewelry. But that is not all; Garnet has several other uses too. Garnet sand is a good abrasive and used as a replacement for silica sand in sand blasting. Garnet is also used to cut steel and other materials in water jets. Garnet sand is also used for water filtration media.

Garnets are found in metamorphic and igneous rocks. They form under extremely high temperatures and pressure.

Currently, the world’s largest supply of garnets is the continent of Africa. In December 1996, a student in Central Australia discovered what is thought to be the largest single garnet ever found – measuring nearly one hundred feet across!

It is found around the world, including in the United States, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Zambia, Tanzania, Afghanistan, India, Brazil, Austria, Germany, and Sweden. Garnet gemstones are found in many places including Sri Lanka, Brazil, Africa, Siberia, Italy, Australia, India, Russia, Turkey, South America and the United States.

Almandine: Almandine or Almandite (called in the USA) deposits are found in many rock types. Large crystals of this gem are found in Burma (Myanmar). Other than this the gemstone is found in Thailand, Brazil, Tanzania, Mozambique, India, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Madagascar and the USA.

Pyrope: This gem deposit is found in India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar and USA.

Rhodolite: Rhodolite crystal was first found in Carolina in the USA, but it is also found in the country of Tanzania (Umba River Valley), Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar.

Clean garnet stones with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Rinse the stone well after washing it. Ultrasonic treatments may be used for most garnets, except the demantoid variety. Steam cleaning garnets may cause color changes from the heat.
